Somehow I find myself sitting inside a bamboo framed window that’s wide open, staring out at philodendron fronds with the warm evening wind and the sound of waves pouring through at me. Somehow I find myself on the Big Island of Hawaii and it hasn’t taken me long to get used to being hugged by warm light and tropical air. I have made a cheeky winter escape! Something I am lucky enough to do to break up those long, dim, cold, wet Whistler months.
I traveled from one kind of beauty…
…to a completely different kind of beauty.
What a planet we live on!
And as much as I miss my dog, this warm break has my body thanking me as I soak in the sun, dose up on vitamin sea and spin my pale legs back to life.
My favorite road ride took me from the quiet beach town of Puako, forward along the northwest coast, up through the hinterland town of Hawi and across to Pololu on the northeastern side. I could see Humpback Whales spouting and breaching beyond my weird curled bars and we took a short hike down to the black sand of Pololu Beach for a fresh post ride swim. My smile is still on my face. Another good out and back was following the Kalapana Beach Road shoreline on the highly volcanic southeastern edge of the island.
Because of old injuries, pain stops me from doing very long distances on the road but I am grateful to be making circles with my legs in anticipation of dirt season!
Now it’s back home I go to my mountains and my pup. A bit more snow to play in until my part of the world starts waking from winter…
…and until, whether it’s out my back door or somewhere new and exotic, my bikes take me on more beautiful rides.
